[:en]Thoughts from Isaiah 5[:]

[:en]The nation of Israel was the vineyard.  The Lord had done so much for the vineyard -dugging, cleaning, planting, cutting and building a watchtower on it.  Yet it yielded only bad fruit.  The people sinned and took their blessings for granted.  They were selfishly satisfying themselves.

Sins of the nation:

  1. The rich oppressed the poor (vs. 8-10)
  2. The people lived for sensual pleasure (vs. 11-12)
  3. They questioned God and thought that they were wise (vs. 19-21)
  4. They acquitted the guilty for a bribe and denied justice to the innocent (v. 23-24)

As a result, God’s arm burned against His people.  Judgment came as invading army conquered the land. (vs. 26-30)

Three Significant Vines: (By Warren Wiersbe)

  1. Past vine – Israel (Ps. 80:7-16; Jer. 2:21, 12:10; Ezek. 15; Hos. 10:1)
  2. Present vine – Jesus Christ and His church (John 15)
  3. Future vine – “vine of the earth” the corrupt world system of the last days that is destined to judgment (Rev. 14:14-20)
