“Godliness with contentment is great gain” (v. 6)
“We bought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it; If you have food and clothing, be content with that” (v. 7-8)
“People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction” (v. 9)
“For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (v. 10)
Paul’s Charge to Timothy:
- Flee from all of this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness (v. 11)
- Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called. (v. 12)
- Keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ (v. 14)
- Command those who are rich in the present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment (v. 17)
- Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way, they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life. (v. 18-19)
- Guard what has be entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge which have wandered from the faith (v. 20)
