[:en]The Widow’s Offering (vs. 1-4)
The widow gave out of her poverty in contrast to the rich who give out of the wealth. Jesus admired her generous and sacrificial giving. He measures our giving base on proportion and sees the condition of our hearts. As believers, we should consider increasing our giving – whether money, time or talent with a willing and cheerful heart.
Sign of the End of the Age (vs. 9-38)
At the Mount of Olives, Peter, James and John asked Jesus two questions: “When will these things happen? What will be the signs that they are about to take place?” (v. 7)
Jesus was preparing the disciples for the difficult years ahead. He foretold about false messiahs, natural disasters and persecutions. He warned them that family members will betray them, they will be imprisoned and all men will hate them. But God told them not to worry because He will give them words and wisdom to defend. He said: “But not a hair of your head will perish. By standing firm, you will gain life” (vs. 18-19). He was saying that none of his followers will suffer spiritual or eternal death. He promised to protect them and make His kingdom known through them.
The “Age of the Gentiles” began with the destruction of Jerusalem by Babylon in 586 BC and the exile of the Jewish people until the time of the Gentiles will be fulfilled. The events of the coming wars, revolutions , persecutions and natural disasters (earthquakes, famines and pestilences) are now happening. It is a sign that the return of the Messiah is at hand. Believers can now look forward to His reign of justice and peace.
Jesus told the disciples to be prepared and constantly watch for His return. His coming will be sudden, glorious and with great power. So, we must be alert and ready to work faithfully the tasks that God has given us. Do not indulge in foolish pleasures and careless living. Rather watch and pray and live a holy life.
“Heaven and earth will pass away but my words will never pass away” (v. 33)
