[:en]Jesus Washes His Disciple’s Feet (vs. 1-17)

Jesus knew the time had come for Him to leave the world.  So he showed the disciples the full extent of His love.  In ancient days, a household servant was to wash the feet of guests when they arrived.  Jesus wrapped a towel around His wait and began to wash and dry His disciple’s feet.  He demonstrated the servant attitude for the disciples to emulate.  He also taught them that to be a leader, he must be a servant.

Peter was confused when he saw Jesus washing the disciple’s feet.  When it was his turn, he refused to be washed.  Then Jesus said”  “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me” (v. 9)  Upon hearing that, Peter asked Jesus to wash not just his feet but also his hands as well.

Are you willing to follow Christ’s example of servanthood?  Do you want to serve in anyway that glorifies God?

Jesus Predicts His Betrayal (vs. 18-30)

Satan used Judas Iscariot to have Jesus killed.  He did not know that Jesus’ death was the most important part of God’s plan to fulfill His mission.

Satan is alike a roaring lion searching for those whom he can devour.  Be careful because He uses many schemes to tempt you to betray Jesus.

Jesus Predicts Peter’s Burial (vs. 31-38)

Jesus gave this new command:  “Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you  must love one another.  By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (vs. 34-35)  The love that Jesus meant is the sacrificial love that He gave us.  Such love can bring unbelievers to Christ and keep believers united.  Such love is more than vain feelings.  It is an attitude that reveals in action.  We are to help even if it is not convenient , to give to the best of our capability, to consider others welfare more than our own, to endure hurts without retaliation.  Then people will know that we really are the disciples of Christ.  Jesus gives us a living example of God’s love and He expects us to be living examples of His love.

Peter proudly told Jesus that he was willing to die with Him.  But Jesus said:  Will you really lay down your life for me?  I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me 3 times” (v. 38)

Lessons:

  1. Be humble and serve with a servant heart. (Jesus)
  2. Do not betray Jesus by your words or deeds.  (Judas Iscariot)
  3. Love one another as God loves you.  (Jesus)
  4. Do not make promises without true commitment.  (Peter)
