Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian Elders (vs. 13-38)

Paul arrived at Ephesus and gave his farewell speech to the Ephesian elders.  The Holy Spirit had compelled him to go to Jerusalem.  He was willing to fulfill his mission even though he knew that he would be imprisoned and experience suffering there.  He said: “I consider my life worth nothing to me, if only I may finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me – the task of testifying to the gospel of God’s grace” (v. 24)  He told them: “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you oversee.  Be shepherds of the church of God which he brought with his own blood.   I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will no spare the flock.  Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them.  So be on your guard!  Remember that for 3 years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears” (vs. 28-31)

Paul was a tentmaker and he supported himself with this trade.  He worked not to become rich but to be free from being dependent on anyone.  He supported himself as well as others who traveled with him.  He quoted the word the Lord Jesus said”  “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (v. 35)[:]
