[:en]The Jews were entrenched in thinking and worshiping God in traditional forms. Following Jesus seemed to repudiate their marvelous heritage and Scriptures. That was why they were cautious as they listened to the gospel and considered it as “heresy”.
Hebrews was written to the Jews who were struggling with this new faith of Jesus. The message of Hebrews is that Christianity is superior and Jesus Christ is supreme and completely sufficient for salvation.
The Jews, who had become Christians in the first century were tempted to fall back into Judaism because of uncertainty, security, customs and persecutions. Today, believers are also tempted to fall back into legalism rather than genuine faith. We must strive fo live by faith.
THE SON SUPERIOR TO ANGELS (vs. 1-14)
God used many approaches to send his message to people in the Old Testament times. He spoke to Isaiah in visions (Isa. 6), to Jacob in a dream (Gen. 28:12-22) and Abraham and Moses personally (Gen. 18; Exo. 31:18). But now God had revealed himself by speaking through His Son Jesus Christ.
The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by His powerful,l word” (v. 3) God has saving power and creative power. He brought the universe into being and keep it operating. He provides salvation for all mankind and cleanse our sins.
Jesus is the “son of God” who is greater than the angels. He is the first born, superior to any created beings. His authority is established over all of creations so that we must not treat any created object or earthly resources more important than Him.
Many Jews had experienced the rejection of their fellow Jews and were being isolated. They were tempted to exchange their changeless Christ and return to their old faith.
The writer of Hebrews emphasized that Christ is the only security in a changing world because He is forever changeless. He is the solid rock with the firmest foundation where we can be safe and secure. His love and mercy will never change.[:]
