[:en]Thoughts from Philemon[:]

[:en]Philemon was a leader of the church of Colosse and a friend o Paul.  Onesemus was a domestic slave of Philemon who run away to Rome wheren he met Paul and became a Christian.  Paul convinced Onesimus to return to his master by bringing this letter to Philemon asking him to reconcile with his run-away slave.

THANKSGIVING AND PRAYER (vs. 4-7)

Due to persecution, early Christians often met in people’s home.  Philemon was a wealthy man who oponed hsi house for people to worship there.  Paul thanked God for Philemon’s faith and love which gave Paul great joy and encouragement.

PAUL’S PLEA FOR ONESIMUS (vs. 8-25)

From his prison cell, Paul had led Onesimus to the Lord.  Paul asked Philemon to forgive his run-away slave.

“Onesimus” means useful.  He had been useful to Philemon in the past but now had became usefuil to Paul.  Paul sent Onesimus back requesting that Philemon will accept him not only as a forgiven run-away servant but also as a brother in Christ.

Paul showed geniune love for Onesimus by personally guaranteeing payment for any stolen goods or wrongs that Onesimus had committed.

Since Paul was the spiritual father who led Philemon to Christ, he was hoping that Philemon would feel a debt of gratitude that he would repay by accepting Onesimus with a spirit of forgiveness.  He urged Philemon to be reconciled to his slave and received him as a brother and a fellow worker of God’s family.

THINGS TO PONDER:

  1.  Christian relationship requires forgiveness and acceptance.  Can you forgive those who have wronged you?
  2. In Christ, we are one God’s family.  There should be no racial, economic or political difference among Christians.
  3. Paul used tactful persuasion instead of command in dealing with Philemon.  We should also exhibit courtesy and repect in our relationship among brothers in Christ..
