[:en]Thoughts from Psalms 72[:]

[:en]This was the last Psalm of David written for Solomon when he became the king.  It also pictured our Lord Jesus when He reigns as King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

The first emphasis was about “justice” or “righteousness”.  It was mentioned several times in this Psalm.  “Endow the king with your justice, O God, the royal son with your righteousness.  He will judge your people in righteousness, your afflicted ones with justice.  The mountains will bring prosperity to the people, the hills the fruit of righteousness” (vs. 1-3)  “In his days the righteous will flourish, (v. 7).  David wanted Solomon to be a righteous king.  He wanted him to have the integrity and honesty in exercising kingly judgment.  Our Lord Jesus Christ is a righteous God who never makes mistake.

David wanted Solomon to defend the afflicted, to save the children of needs, to crush the oppressor and take pity on the weak. (vs. 4, 12, 14).  He wanted him to flourish and prosper in his reign.  All his enemies will lick the dust, the king of Tarshish and of distant shores will bring tribute to him, the kings of Sheba and Seba will present him gifts of gold and all kings will bow down to him and all nations will serve him. (vs. 7-11).  People will pray for him and bless him. (v. 15).  Grain will abound through the land.  Fruits will flourish and thrive like the grass of the field. (v. 16)  He was also concerned about his name.  “May his name endure forever, may it continue as long as the sun.  All nations will be blessed through him and they will call him blessed. (v. 17)

In conclusion, he praised God who did marvelous deeds.  He praised His glorious name forever.

Solomon was the wisest and richest king.  But Christ is greater than Solomon.  Solomon has a name that remains up to present.  But the name of our Lord Jesus shall be made known till the ends of the earth.

  1. Blessed name (v. 17a) – all nations will be blessed through Him
  2. Enduring name (v. 17b) – his name will endure forever
  3. Wonderful name (v. 18) – He does marvelous deeds.  The apostles used His name to proclaim the gospel and to heal the sick
