[:en]Israel and Assyria united to depose King Ahaz, the king of Judah. The Lord told the king of Israel to ask a sign from God but he refused. Instead, he trusted in his own wisdom to make a treaty with the king of Assyria. Later, Assyria invaded Israel in 722 BC and the nation came to an end. The Assyria also invaded Judah during the reign of King Hezekiah but God defeated them. However, because God’s people would not trust God, Assyria humbled Judah.
Because the house of David refused to listen, the Lord gave them this sign. “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (v. 14). As the baby grew up, the land of the two kings will be laid waste. The king of Assyria will be the Lord’s instrument to defeat them.[:]
