[:en]SCRIPTURE:  TITUS 3

“Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men” (Titus 3: 1-2)

“But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and arguments and quarrels about the law, because these are unprofitable and useless” (Titus 3:9)

This is the final letter for Titus.  Paul discussed about two additional classes of people:

  1.  Rulers – Christians must be subject to rulers and authorities.  We are not to involved in politics but we are to support government programs and projects that are good.
  2. Divisive People – Avoid arguing with members who are causing divisions.  They are church troublemakers who love to argue about words and genealogies.  Paul told Titus to dismiss them from their fellowship.  If they repented, they should be received back.  However, if they cause trouble again, warn them a second time.  But if they attempt to do it again, they must not be received into fellowship.

Paul emphasized that the “grace of God” saves us and controls our lives.  Before, our old life is full of malice, hatred and evil desires.  But since we are saved by God’s mercy and love, we are justified by grace and become an heir of God.  This wonderful salvation should motivate us to do good and live godly lives.

Paul informed Titus that he was sending Artemas or Tychicus to assist him.  Zenas and Apollos brought the letter to Titus, so Paul advised him to help them continue their journey.  His closing remarks was “Grace be with you all”.

LESSON:

Christians must be subject to rulers and authorities.  We must honor the laws of the land and involved in good causes of government.  However, if the laws contradict with the Word, we must not compromise our conviction because our first allegiance is to God.

Refrain from people in the church who are forming parties and divisions.  They love to argue about words with empty discussions that will cause church division.

Our motive for godly living originates from the grace of God.  Through His grace, we are saved and reconciled to God.  Through His grace, we are born again and became His children.  Therefore, we must not abuse His grace to commit sin.  Instead, the grace of God should control our lives and make us be more like Christ.

God’s ministry needs succession.  Every believer must help one another in our Christian journey.  We should share in the ministry of hospitality and encouragement with love.[:]
