“You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 7:17)

“Because Jesus lives forever, He has a permanent priesthood.  Therefore, He is able to save completely those who come to God through Him, because He always lives to intercede for them” (Hebrews 7:24-25)

Melchizedek the Priest:

Melchizedek was King of Salem meaning “King of Peace”.   His name means “King of Righteousness”.  He was without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning or end.  Melchizedek is superior to Aaron.  In the Jewish temple, the priests received tithes but Aaron paid tithes to Melchizedek while yet unborn in the loins of Abraham.

Priesthood of Christ versus Aaron:

  1.  God set aside the Levitical priesthood founded in Aaron and established the new order when He said to Christ:  “Thou art a priest forever after the order of Melchizedek”.
  2. Aaron was made priest by carnal commandment;  Christ was ordained to be a priest with an unchanging oath.
  3. The priesthood of Aaron did not last forever because he died and his sons after him also died.   Christ lives by the power of an endless life.  His priesthood is permanent.
  4. Aaron made a golden calf and led Israel into idolatry; Christ is perfect High Priest.  He is blameless, pure, set apart from sinners and exalted above the heaven.
  5. Aaron had to offer daily sacrifice for himself and for his people.  Christ offered Himself as a sacrifice once and for all.

Similarity of Melchizedek and Jesus:

  1. Both Melchizedek and Jesus are King and Priest.
  2. Melchizedek was King of Salem -King of Peace.  Jesus is our Prince of Peace.
  3. The name of Melchizedek means “King of Righteousness”.  Christ is a Righteous king.
  4. Both Melchizedek and Christ are without beginning or end.  Their priesthoods are permanent.

LESSON:

God had ordained Christ to be a priest forever with an oath.  Jesus has become a guarantee of a lasting covenant.  Therefore, He is able to save completely and intercede for those who come to God through Him.  Christ is made perfect and He is all what we need.  Are you willing to come to Jesus and accept Him as your personal Savior?
