[:en]SCRIPTURE:  ROMANS 2

“You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for all whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things” (Romans 2:1)

“God will give to each person according to what he has done” (Romans 2:6)

“There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile; but glory, honor and peace for everyone who does good:  first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.  For God does not show favoritism” (Romans 2: 9-11)

GOD’S RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT (vs. 1-16)

Paul stated how God judges:

  1. God’s judgment is based on truth (v. 2) – The Jews thought that they would not be judged similar as to the Gentiles because they were God’s chosen people.   They had abused God’s goodness by hardening their hearts and committing more sins.  Their unrepentant heart stood up God’s wrath for judgment.
  2. God’s judgment is based on a person’s deeds (v. 6) – God judges mankind according to the deeds performed in life.  “For God will give to each person according to what he has done because He does not show favoritism (v. 11)  The Gentiles did not have the Law but the Jews had.  But the Gentiles had the moral law of God written in their hearts.  So both the Jews and the Gentiles will be judged but the Jews who hear the Law will be judged more severely.
  3. God’s judgment is not outwardly and physically but inwardly and morally (vs. 28-29) – Judgment will be of the heart not “religion”.  Physical rite or outward ceremonies are useless without inward change.  Circumcision is circumcision of the heart by the Spirit, not by the written code (v. 29)

SUMMARY:

  1. Do not cover up your sins by criticizing others (v. 1)
  2. Accept the gospel and repent of your sins so that God’s wrath will not be upon you (v. 5)
  3. Those who do evil will have trouble and distress (v. 9)
  4. Those who do good will have honor and peace (v. 10)
  5. Obedience to God’s Word is better than outward religion and physical rites (vs. 25-27)
  6. The Day of the Judgment will be of the heart when all the secrets will be revealed (v. 29)
