“In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus” (Rams 6:11)

“For sin shall not be your master because you are not under law but under grace” (Romans 6:14)

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus, our Lord” (Romans 6:23)

DEAD TO SIN, ALIVE IN CHRIST (vs. 1-14)

In order to be dead to sin and alive in Christ we should know the following:

  1.  All of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death (v. 3)
  2. We were buried with Him through baptism into death that we too may live a new life (v.4)
  3. We have been united with Him in His death, so we will also be united with Him in His resurrection (v. 5)
  4. Our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be done away with.  But we should no longer be slave to sin – because anyone who has died has been freed from sin (v. 6-7)
  5. As we have died with Christ, we will also live with Him (v. 8)
  6. Since Christ was raised from the dead, He cannot die again.  Death no longer has mastery over Him.  The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God (v. 9)

SLAVES TO RIGHTEOUSNESS (vs. 15-23)

Paul cited an example of master and servant.  Before we are saved, we are slaves to sin and receive the wages of sin which is death.  After we have received Christ as Savior, we have been made free from sin.  Christ becomes our new master and we are now servants of righteousness instead of servants of sin.  As we offer ourselves to God, He comes to control our lives and we reap the benefit of holiness that results in eternal life.

Christians who deliberately sin are people who have yielded themselves to the old nature instead of to the Holy Spirit.  In order for us to be victorious over our flesh, we must know that Christ died for us, that our old natures are dealt with on the cross, that we have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God.  Therefore, we receive a new nature from God with the free gift of God, which is eternal life.[:]
