[:en]SCRIPTURE:  JOB 20

“What he toiled for he must give back uneaten; he will not enjoy the profit from his trading.  For he has oppressed the poor and left them destitute; he has seized house he did not build” (Job 20:18-19)

Zophar the Naamathite described the fate of the wicked man as follows:

  1. The mirth of the wicked is brief and the joy of the godless is temporary (v. 5)
  2. He will fly away and perish like a vision on the night (vs. 7-8)
  3. His children must make amends to the poor, his oven hands must give back his wealth (v. 10)
  4. He will spit out the riches he swallowed (v. 15)
  5. He will not enjoy his toil and profit of his trading (v. 18)
  6. He cannot save himself by his treasures; his prosperity will not endure (vs. 20-21)
  7. In the midst of his plenty, distress will overtake him and misery will come upon him (v. 22)
  8. Terrors, darkness and fire are his lot and then the end (vs. 25-29)

Zophar tried to frighten Job into confessing his sins and getting right with God, but his approach was wrong.  His motive for Job to obey God is legitimate but it must be tempered by love.[:]
