[:en]SCRIPTURE: PSALM 71
“Rescue me and deliver me in your righteousness; turn your ear to me and save me. Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go; give command to save me, for you are my rock and my fortress” (Psalm 71:2-3)
For you have been my hope, O Sovereign Lord, my confidence since my youth” (Psalm 71:5)
“Do not cast me away when I am old; do not forsake me when my strength is gone” (Psalm 71:9)
“But as for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more” (Psalm 71:14)
“Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come” (Psalm 71:18)
Though you have made me see troubles. many and bitter, you will restore my life again; from the depths of the earth you will again bring me up. You will increase my honor and comfort me once again (Psalm 71:20-21)
The Psalmist reviewed his life from birth until he is now old. He relied on the Lord at birth. When he was a youth, he trusted the Lord as his strong refuge. During his mature years, the Lord cared for him. Now that he is old, he prayed to God not to forsake him.
WHAT THE PSALMIST WILL DO AS HE GOT OLDER:
- He will always have hope (v. 14a)
- He will praise the Lord more and more (v. 14b)
- He will tell of God’s righteousness and salvation (v. 15)(
- He will proclaim His mighty acts and righteousness (v. 16)
- He will declare His power and might to the next generation (v. 18)
- He will praise Him with harp for His righteousness (v. 22a)
- He will sing praise to God with lyre (v. 22b)
- He will shout for joy and sing praise to his redeemer (v. 23)
- He will tell of His righteous acts (v. 24)
WHAT ARE THE IDEAL WAYS FOR A CHRISTIAN TO SPEND HIS OLD AGE?
- Devote more time to prayer and reading of His Word.
- Trust the Lord in everything
- Keep a song on your lips and in your heart
- Put you hope in the Lord
- Share God’s mighty deeds to your next generation
