[:en]SCRIPTURE: JEREMIAH 26
” Say to them: “This is what the Lord says: “If you do not listen to me and follow my law, which I have set before you, and if you do not listen to the words of my servants the prophets, whom I have sent to you again and again (though you have not listened), then I will make this house like Shiloh and this city an object of cursing among all the nations of the earth” (Jeremiah 26:4-6)
“Now reform your ways and your actions and obey the Lord your God. Then the Lord will relent and not bring the disaster he has pronounced against” (Jeremiah 26:13)
JEREMIAH THREATENED WITH DEATH
The Lord told Jeremiah to stand in the courtyard of the Lord’s house and speak to all the people who came to worship. He told them to listen to God’s word and turn from their evil ways. Then God will relent and not bring disasters upon them. But if they refused to listen to His laws, He will make this house like Shiloh. This city will be an object of cursing among the nations of the earth. (vs. 1-6)
When the priests, the prophets and all the people heard what Jeremiah said, they seized him. But there were elders, officials and people who knew the Word of God. They opposed to sentence Jeremiah to death. They cited examples of pervious kings who did not put to death God’s prophets that prophesied. They were able to guide them moved towards safety and justice.
There is another man named Uriah who prophesied the same things against this city and this land as Jeremiah did. King Jehoiakim and his officials wanted to put him to death. When Uriah heard, he fled to Egypt. But king Jehoiakim sent men to bring Uriah out of Egypt and struck him down with a sword.
However, Ahikam, son of Shaphan supported Jeremiah, so he was not handed over to the people to be put to death. Jeremiah stood on his ground and God protected him.
