[:en]SCRIPTURE:  MARK 2

Bible Verses:

“Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17)

No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment. Otherwise, the new piece will pull away from the old, making the tear worse.  And no one pours new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and both the wine and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins.” (Mark 2:21-22)

“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.  So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.” (Mark 2:27-28)

JESUS HEALS A PARALYTIC (vs. 1-17)

When Jesus entered Capernaum, many people gathered to hear him preach the Word.  A paralyzed man was brought to Jesus through the roof.  Jesus forgave his sins and healed him.

THE CALLING OF LEVI (vs. 13-17)

While Jesus was walking, he saw Levi, son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth.  He said to him : “Follow me”.  Levi got up and followed him immediately.  Then, he hosted a dinner with Jesus and his disciples together with many tax collectors and sinners at his house.  When the teachers of the law and tax collectors saw it, they asked his disciples:  “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”  Jesus answered: “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, butt the sick.  I have not come to call the righteous but sinners” (v. 17)

JESUS QUESTIONED ABOUT FASTING (vs. 18-22)

Some people were questioning why Jesus’ disciples did not fast when John’s disciples and the Pharisees were fasting.  Jesus replied: “As long as the bridegroom is with them, the cannot fast.  But when the bridegroom will be taken from them, then, they will fast” (v. 20).  Then Jesus used two examples:  the new/old garments and the new/old wine to convey a message.  The new garments cannot be patched into an old garments.  Otherwise it will make the tear worse.  The new wine cannot be poured into old wineskin because the wine will burst and ruin both the wine and wineskins.  Similarly, Jesus did not want to compromise and mix his message with theirs.

LORD OF THE SABBATH (vs. 23-28)

The Pharisees were questioning why the disciples were picking heads of grain during the Sabbath day.  Jesus defended himself and his disciples by referring to David’s experience and affirming that He is the Lord of Sabbath.

THE PHARISEES QUESTIONED JESUS ON THE FOLLOWING ISSUES:

  1.  Forgiveness of sins – Jesus is God who can forgive sins
  2.  Fellowship with sinners – Jesus wants to save the sinners
  3.  Failing to fast – Jesus wants to emphasize that Christian life is a feast not a funeral
  4.  Doing things on Sabbath day – Jesus refuted traditions and affirmed that He is the Lord of Sabbath.
