JESUS REJECTED AT NAZARETH (vs. 14-30)
Jesus went to his hometown Nazareth to preach at the synagogue on the Sabbath day. He took up a scroll of prophet Isaiah and read the prophecy which was fulfilled in him as follows:
- The Spirit of the Lord is on Jesus.
- He was anointed to preach good news to the poor
- He was sent to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind and release the oppressed.
- He was to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
Jesus declared: “No prophet is accepted in his hometown. He cited that there was famine in Israel and there were many widows in Israel. Yet Elijah was not sent to them but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon. And there were many in Israel with leprosy, yet not one of them was cleansed – only Naaman, the Syrian. Upon hearing this, the people were furious. They drove Jesus out.
JESUS DRIVES OUT AN EVIL SPIRIT (vs. 31-38)
There was a an possessed by a demon in the synagogue. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and begged him not to destroy him because he is Jesus of Nazareth – the Holy One of God” (vs. 33-34). Jesus told him to be quiet and come out of the man. The demon came out and all the people were amazed. The news about him spread through the surrounding area.
JESUS HEALS MANY (vs. 38-44)
Simon’s mother-in-law was suffering from a high fever. Jesus went there and rebuked the fever and it left her. People with various kinds of sickness came to Jesus to be healed. He also rebuked many demons and many came out from many people.
Then Jesus went out to a solitary place. The people wanted Jesus to stay but Jesus said: :I must preach the good news of the Kingdom of God to the other towns also because that is why I was sent” (v. 43)
LESSONS:
- Satan tempted Jesus but Jesus used the word of God to win against him. Today, we may also experience temptation and trials. Let us use the Word of God to fight against them.
- When Jesus preached a convicting sermon to the Israelites, the people became angry and drove him away. Will a convicting sermon lead you to repentance or anger? Do you always want to hear the comforting sermon only?
- Jesus brought healing and deliverance to the poor and needy by the authority of His Word. We may not have the power to heal but we can comfort and assist those who are needy in Jesus’ name.
