[:en]SCRIPTURE: LUKE 6
Bible Verses:
“Then Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.” (Luke 6:5
“Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” (Luke 6:9)
“Looking at his disciples, he said: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger now,for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man. “Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.” (Luke 6:20-23)
“But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt from them. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:27-31)
“ But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.” (Luke 6:35-36)
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” (Luke 6:37-38)
“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” (Luke 6:41)
“The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Luke 6:45)
“ But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” (Luke 6:49)
LORD OF THE SABBATH (vs. 1-11)
The Pharisees always asked: “Is it lawful” because they had transformed the Sabbath from a day of blessing into a day of bondage. Jesus deliberately healed a man with a shriveled hand on the Sabbath to show his compassion no matter what day it is.
THE TWELVE APOSTLES (VS. 12-16)
Jesus chose 12 apostles as follows: Simon Peter, Andrew, James, John, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James, son of Alphaeus, Simon the Zealot, Jude, son of James Thaddeus and Judas Iscariot, the traitor.
BLESSINGS AND WOES (vs. 17-26)
The Blessings:
- The poor shall inherit the kingdom of God
- The hunger will be satisfied
- Those who weep now will laugh
- Those who are being hated, rejected, excluded and insulted because of the Son of Man will be blessed.
THE WOES:
- The rich will no longer be comforted.
- The well-fed will go hungry
- Those who laugh now will mourn and weep.
- Those whom all men speak well will be treated as false prophets.
LOVE FOR ENEMIES (vs. 27-36)
The Christlike way of treating enemies is to be loving, giving and forgiving. Pray for them and do not take revenge. Conquer your enemy by making him your friend. Be merciful and do good. Your reward will be great and you will be Son of the Most High.
JUDGING OTHERS (vs. 37-42)
- Do not judge or you will be judged.
- Do not condemn so that you will not be condemned.
- Forgive and your will be forgiven.
- Give and it will be given to you.
Jesus was saying that the hypocrite pay no attention to the plank in his own eyes but look at the speck of sawdust in other’s eyes. He told them to take the plank first from their own eyes so that they could see clearly before removing the speck of brother’s eyes.
A TREE AND ITS FRUIT (vs. 43-45)
A good tree does not bear bad fruit nor a bad tree can bear good fruit.
Keep your heart right with God and the Lord will help you produce the good fruit in your life.
THE WISE AND FOOLISH BUILDERS (vs. 46-49)
Jesus compared to one who hears His word and does not put them into practice like a man who build a house on the ground without a foundation. When torrent struck the house, it completely collapsed. When trials comes, he cannot withstand and falls away.
LIFE APPLICATION:
- Jesus is the Lord of Sabbath. Tradition must not restrict us to do good and meet human needs whenever possible.
- Be one of Jesus disciples to preach the gospel to the lost.
- Jesus teaches us to love our enemies, do good to them, bless them and pray for them.
- Do not find fault of brothers without examining yourself first.
- A man speaks out from what is inside his heart. Always keep your heart right with God.
- Build your character with the Word of God as your foundation.
- Be doers of God’s word and not hearers only.
