[:en]SCRIPTURE:  LUKE 12

BIBLE VERSE:

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God.  Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.” (Luke 12:6-7)

I tell you, whoever publicly acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man will also acknowledge before the angels of God. But whoever disowns me before others will be disowned before the angels of God. 10 And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven” (Luke 12:8-10)

““Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” (Luke 12:15)

“But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?  This is how it will be with whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.” (Luke 12:20-21)

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat; or about your body, what you will wear.  For life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.  Consider the ravens: They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds! (Luke 12:22-24)

“Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to your life Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?” (Luke 12:25-26)

But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well.” (Luke 12:31)

Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.” (Luke 12:33)

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” (Luke 12:34)

You also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” (Luke 12:40)

“From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked.” (Luke 12:48)

WARNINGS AND ENCOURAGEMENTS (vs. 1-12)

WARNINGS:

  1.  There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed or hidden that will not be made known (v. 2)
  2.  Do not be afraid of people who kill the body.  Fear him who, after the killing of the body, has power to throw you into hell (vs. 4-5)

  4. Anyone who blaspheme against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven (v. 10)

THE PARABLE OF THE RICH FOOL (vs. 13-21)

A rich man planned to tear down his barns and build a bigger one to store his grain.  He wanted to be merry and enjoy life without knowing that that very night was the end of his existence.  This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God. (v. 21)

DO NOT WORRY (vs. 22-34)

Worry means “to be pulled apart”.  God tells us not to worry about our food or clothes.  Jesus cited two examples:  The ravens and the lilies.  The ravens do not sow or reap.  They have no storeroom or barn yet God feeds them.  The lilies do not labor or spin but God clothes them and make them grow.  Since man is more valuable than birds and lilies, God will surely take care of him.  So, why worry about everything?

Instead of worrying, seek his kingdom and all shall be added to you.  Help the poor and invest in heaven where no thief comes nor moth destroys.  For where your treasure is, there your heart is (v. 34)

WATCHFULNESS (vs. 35-48)

God expects us to serve Him faithfully.  Be ready at anytime and any place because the Son of Man will come at an hour we do not expect.  God will deal with the lazy servants when he returns.  Those given and entrusted much, much will be demanded and asked.

NOT PEACE BUT DIVISION (vs. 49-53)

There will be division among family members:  father vs. son, son vs. father, mother vs. daughter, daughter vs. mother, ,mother-in-law vs. daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law vs. mother-in-law.

INTERPRETING THE TIMES (vs. 54-58)

Modern world understands science, can predict storms and comets but cannot understand “the sings of the times’.  Like people in the days of Noah, they had false security.  Today, people also has the opportunity to reconcile with God.

LESSONS:

  1.  We should fear God, not men.(v. 5)
  2.  We should not be greedy for more wealth which we cannot bring it with us when we die. (v. 20)
