Bible Verses:
“I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. They will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:9-10)
““I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.” (John 10:11)
“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. ” (John 10:27-28)
“My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. I and the Father are one.”” (John 10:29-30)
THE SHEPHERD AND HIS FLOCK (vs. 1-21)
Jesus said: “I am the gate for the sheep” (v. 7) “I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (vs. 7-10). Jesus said: “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (v. 11)
WHAT IS A GOOD SHEPHERD?
- He enters through the door (v. 2)
- He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out (v. 3)
- His sheep knows his voice and follow him (v. 4)
- He finds pasture for his sheep (v. 9)
- He does not run away from danger but lays down his life for the sheep (v. 11-13)
- He brings other sheep to him (v. 16)
- He speaks to them (v. 27)
- He protects the sheep from harm (vs. 28-29)
THE UNBELIEF OF THE JEWS (vs. 22-42)
Jesus affirmed that he is the Son of God. But the Jews did not believe in him. Instead, they picked up stone to stone him and tried to seize him. But Jesus escaped to where John was. He stayed there and many people came to him and believed in Him.
THOUGHTS:
WHO ARE THE TRUE CHRISTIANS?
- They hear His voice and respond to His Word.
- They know Christ and recognize the false shepherd.
- They obediently follow Christ.
- They are secured with eternal life.
SHEEP ARE USED TO ILLUSTRATE CHRISTIANS IN THE FOLLOWING WAYS:
- Sheep are clean animals / Christians have been cleansed from their sins.
- Sheep are harmless / Christian should be blameless and harmless.
- Sheep tend to wander around / Christian also walk in the wrong path
- Sheep needs a shepherd for protection, guidance and food / Christians also need Christ’s protection, guidance and spiritual food.
- Sheep are used for sacrifices / Christian must present themselves as a living sacrifice for Christ.
THOUGHTS:
- Jesus is the gate, the only way to access to God and salvation.
- Jesus is the good shepherd, who is committed to love us by laying down his life for us.
- Jesus knows us and loves us. He speaks to us through His Word. He protects us from eternal damnation and lead us to walk in His ways.
- False teachers and prophets are like hirelings who abandon the sheep and run away when danger comes.
