[:en]SCRIPTURE: JOHN 13

Bible Verses:

No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”  Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.” (John 13:8)

Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” (John 13:14-17)

“Very truly I tell you, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me.”(John 13:20)

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:34-35)

Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”  Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? Very truly I tell you, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three time.” (John 13:37-38)

JESUS WASHES HIS DISCIPLES’ FEET (vs 1-17)

Before the Passover Feast,. Jesus was having a meal with his disciples.  He took a towel, poured water into a basin and washed his disciples’ feet.  He said to his disciples: “No servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him” (v. 16).  He asked his disciples to wash one another’s feet and they will be blessed.

JESUS PREDICTS HIS BETRAYAL (VS. 18-30)

Jesus told his disciples that one of them was going to betray him.  He gave the hint that whoever he gave a piece of bread was that person. Jesus dipped a piece a bread and gave it to Judas Iscariot.

JESUS PREDICTS PETER’S DENIAL (vs. 31-38)

Jesus gave a new command – to love one another as he had loved them.  Loving each other will show to all men that the we are his disciples.  Peter assured Jesus that he will follow hm and lay down his life for him.  But Jesus said: “Before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times” (v. 38)

THOUGHTS:

  1. Jesus showed an attitude of a model servant by washing the disciples’ feet.  He taught them a lesson of humility, holiness and fellowship.  Christians must be humble to serve.  Christian must confess their daily sins to the Lord to keep clean and walk in the light.  Christian must remain in fellowship with him to enjoy his presence and power.  Are you willing to follow His example in your service to the Lord?
  2. Judas was the  disciple being trusted to keep their money.  But he was the one who betrayed Jesus. Jesus had openly warned him and he had every opportunity to change his mind.  But he chose to put off salvation with 30 pieces of silver.  Some Christians may appear to be trustworthy but in reality they don’t believe in God.
  3. Peter boasted about his willingness to die for Christ.  But Jesus warned him about his testing and failure.  Too much confidence is dangerous in our Christian life.
  4. Jesus gave a new commandment to love others as how Christ had loved us.  As Jesus was an example of God’s sacrificial love, we ought to be a living example of Jesus’ love.
  5. Christlike love will show that we are His disciples.  We can draw people to Christ with our love in action – helping, giving, caring and sharing.
