[:en]SCRIPTURE:  JOHN 5

Bible Verses:

“Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life.” (John 5:24)

For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself.  And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.” (John 5:26-27)

How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God[? (John 4:44)

THE HEALING AT THE POOL (vs. 1-15)

There was a pool in Jerusalem near the sheep gate called Bethesda where the disabled people assembled to get in the water when stirred.  Jesus saw a man invalid for 38 years lying there and asked him: “Do you want to get well?” (v. 6). The man replied: “I have no one to help me into the pool.  When I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me” (v. 7).  So Jesus told him:  “Get up, pick up your mat and walk (v. 8).  At once, the man was cured.  He picked up his mat and walked.  That was a Sabbath day.  When the Jews saw him walking, they asked him who healed him.  He had no idea because Jesus had slipped away into the crowd.

When Jesus found him at the temple, he said to him: “See, you are well again.  Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you” (v. 14).  So the man told the Jews that it was Jesus who had made him well.

LIFE THROUGH THE SON (vs. 16-30)

The Jews persecuted Jesus because he broke the Sabbath day and called God his own Father making himself equal with God.

JESUS IS EQUAL TO THE FATHER IN THREE WAYS:

  1.  Equal in Works – “Whatever the Father does, the son also does.  The Father raises the dead and gives life. (v. 19)
  2.  Equal in Judgment – The Father had entrusted all judgment to the Son (v. 22) and give him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man (v. 27)
  3.  Equal in Honor – Just as they honor the Father, they may honor Son.  He who does not honor the Son does not honor the Father who sent him (v. 23)

TESTIMONIES ABOUT JESUS (vs. 31-46)

  1.  John the Baptist testified that Jesus is the Son of God.
  2. Christ’s work given by the Father testified  that the Father had sent him.
  3. Old Testament Scriptures written by Moses reveals Father’s witness to His Son.

LIFE APPLICATION:

  1.  The invalid man seems to be hopeless but Jesus healed him.  No matter what infirmities you are suffering, or problems that seem impossible to handle, God can meet to your deepest needs.
  2. The paralyzed man can now walk but he needed to have his sins forgiven.  We also need to seek God’s forgiveness to be spiritually healed.
  3. God rested on the Seventh day does not mean that we stop doing good on that day because Jesus himself gave us an example to follow.
  4. Jesus is the Son of God sent by the Father to give us salvation.  When we believe in Him and accept Him as our Saviour, we are identified with Jesus.  So, we must honor him and live a holy life.
