SCRIPTURE:  1 CORINTHIANS 11

BIBLE VERSES:

But I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. ( 1 Corinthians 11:3)

So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. 28 Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup. 29 For those who eat and drink without discerning the body of Christ eat and drink judgment on themselves.” (1 Corinthians 11:27-29)

PROPRIETY IN WORSHIP ( vs. 1-16)

Paul noticed the disorder in the public assembly at Corinth.  Their meetings were disorderly and unscriptural.  During their times, one mark of a sinful woman was her short hair without using veil for a covering.  That was a sign of disrespect to their husband and a a mark of immorality.  That was why Paul warned the women of the church not to worship in public without a veiled head.  That veil was a sign of subordination to the Lord and recognition of her husband’s headship.

REASONS WHY WOMEN MUST KEEP THEIR PROPER PLACE IN THE CHURCH:

  1. To show respect to their husband
  2. To honor Christ as the head of the church
  3. To agree with the plan of creation – Eve was created for Adam
  4. To teach subordination to women.

THE LORD’S SUPPER (vs. 17-33)

The early church held a “love feast” – a fellowship meal in conjunction with the Lord’s Supper.  In Corinth, the rich came with their bounties while the poor were being humiliated with a crust of bread.  The rich ate ahead and got drunk bringing disgrace to the Lord.  That was why Paul told them to eat at home instead.

Corinthian church was partaking God’s supper in unworthy manner because they did not examine themselves before eating the bread and drinking the cup.  As a result, sickness and death came to the Corinthian church as judgment.

Paul gave them 3 remedies to correct their disorder:

  1. Self-judgment (vs. 31-32) – face sin honestly and confess them
  2. Show Christian love (v. 33) – Be considerate by thinking of others first
  3. Do not make the church as a place for entertainment or to feed the saints (v. 34) – Church fellowship is okay but the place to eat is at home.

THOUGHTS:

Paul wrote this letter focusing on the proper attitude and conduct in worship.  He stressed on submission to prevent chaos.  He urged them to serve God by willing to submit to others, to church, to spouses and to government leaders.

Paul explained that the Lord’s Supper symbolizes the death of Christ and remind us of  the hope of His glorious return.  Eating the bread and drinking the cup shows that we are remembering his death and renewing our commitment to serve him.

Paul give specific instruction on how the Lord’s Supper should be observed:

  1. Take it thoughtfully in proclaiming His death (v. 26)
  2. Take it worthily with reverence and respect (v. 27)
  3. Examine yourself for the unconfused sins (v. 28)
  4. Be considerate of others (v. 33)
