SCRIPTURE: HEBREWS 4
BIBLE VERSES:
“There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience.” (Hebrews 4: 9-11)
“For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” (Hebrews 4:13-12)
“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” (Hebrews 4:14-16)
A SABBATH REST FOR THE PEOPLE OF GOD (vs. 1-13)
Those who have heard the message of the gospel and believe it can enter into God’s rest. But those who are disobedient to his voice cannot go in to that rest. God’s call is TODAY!
When God created the world, he rested on the Sabbath day. There is a Sabbath rest for the people of God who also rest from their own work.
HOW TO ENTER INTO GOD’S REST?
- Let us be careful of unbelief. (v. 1)
- Let us make every effort to enter that rest (v. 11)
- Let us be diligent in readying the Word of God by applying God’s Word to mature spiritually (v. 12)
- Let us hold firmly to the faith and show good testimony (v. 14)
- Let us approach the throne of grace with confidence to receive mercy and find grace in our time of need (v. 16)
JESUS THE GREAT HIGH PRIEST (vs. 14-16)
Jesus is the high priest who had been tempted in every way yet was without sin. He is able to sympathize with out weakness. Therefore, let us approach the throne of grace with confidence to receive and find grace to help us in times of ned (v. 16)
THOUGHTS:
During Moses’ time, the Israelites had turned back from the promised rest in God. Today, the difficulties of life may overshadow the promises of God and make us turn back. Let us trust God’s power to see us through.
God rested on the Sabbath signified the completion of creation. When we trust God to complete his good and perfect work in us, then, we can claim our Sabbath rest in Christ and enjoy peace.
