SCRIPTURE: 1 TIMOTHY 6
BIBLE VERSES:
“ But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. 8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.” (1 Timothy 6:6-8)
“Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs” (1 Timothy 6:9-10) “
“But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.” (1 Timothy 6:11-12)
“Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. 18 Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.” ( 1 Timothy 6:17-18)
Paul told the slaves and the masters to show respect to each others because they are brothers in Christ.
LOVE OF MONEY (vs. 3-10)
Paul taught them that the most important values in life are godliness and contentment. The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. We should be contented if we have food and clothing. Do not want to get rich and fall into all kinds of temptations. The desire for money traps us into many harmful desires that plunge us into ruin and destruction. It makes us wander from the faith and causes us many griefs.
PAUL’S CHARGE TO TIMOTHY (vs. 11-17)
Paul addressed this letter to different groups of people:
- To Slaves (v. 1) – Consider your masters worthy of respect. Serve them faithfully.
- To Masters (v. 2) – Respect your slaves because they are brothers in Christ.
- To False teachers (v. 3) – Do not teach false doctrine with intention of getting financial gain that results in quarrel, envy, strife, malicious talk, evil, suspicious and constant friction.
- The People (vs. 6-10) – Do not want to get rich and fall into all kinds of temptation and evils. Instead, learn to be contented.
- The Rich (vs. 17-19) – Do not be arrogant nor put your hope in wealth. Instead, do good deeds, be generous and willing to share.
- To Timothy (v. 20) – Guard what was entrusted to you and turn away godless chatter and false knowledge.
THOUGHTS:
- The master-slave relationship can be applied to employer-employee relationship today. Employees should work hard and show respect to their employers. Employers should be kind to their employees and compensate them fairly.
- We should build our foundation on the Word of God so that we can discern false doctrine and false teachings.
- Wealth is temporary. Do not crave for more money because greed leads to all kinds of evil. Distinguish what is need and want and be contented with what you have.
- The rich should be humble and use their wealth to do good deeds by caring and sharing so that God can be glorified.
- God’s workers must serve God faithfully by obeying His command and adhering to correct teachings. He should be the shepherd of the flock watching them with love and care.
