SCRIPTURE: GENESIS 2
BIBLE VERSES:
“By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done” (Genesis 2:2-3)
“Then the Lord God formed a man[c] from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.” (Genesis 2:7)
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”” (Genesis 2:15-17)
“The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.” (Genesis 2:18)
“So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman, ’for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.” (Genesis 2:22-24)
God completed his creation for 6 days and rested on the 7th day.
ADAM AND EVE (vs. 4-25)
God created Adam from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breathe of life and the man became a living being.
God planted the Garden of Eden and made all kinds of trees with the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. There were 4 rivers watering the garden. The first river is Pisha, the second, Gihon, the third, Tigris, and fourth Euphrates.
God took Adam to take care of it and told him not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. He commanded him to give names to all the living creatures, livestock, birds of the air and all beast of the field. Since Adam was alone without any helper, God created a woman from Adam’s rib to become his wife. Her name is Eve.
THOUGHTS:
God worked for 6 days and rested on the 7th day. He demonstrated that rest is appropriate and right. He also demonstrated this principle when he and his disciples left in a boat to get away from the crowd. We should have rest and work in balance. God blessed the 7th day and commanded us to observe the Sabbath day and keep it holy.
GOD’S COMMANDS TO ADAM:
- Do not eat fruits from the tree of knowledge of good and evil or you will surely die.
- Give names to the living creatures: animals, birds and beasts.
- Take good care of the garden.
- You and your wife Eve will be united to become one flesh.
Eve was not made from Adam’s feet to be trampled by him, or from his head to rule over him, but from his side, to be near his heart and love him. Our body is made from the dust of the ground. It is lifeless until God gave his breathe of life. Therefore, our life and worth came from God’s spirit, not from our achievements and abilities. So, do not feel worthless if you do not have abilities to stand out nor should you feel proud because you have achievements to show off. Value life as a gift from God.
God gave a command to Adam and Eve with the freedom to choose. Eve and Adam chose to disobey and suffered the consequences of sin. It teaches us to think and choose carefully. When you are facing a choice, always choose to obey God.
God chose to make Eve from the man’s flesh and bone instead of from the dust. He illustrated that man and woman are united into one in marriage. The union should be more than friendship but commitment into oneness.
3 Basic aspects of marriage:
- The man leaves his parents to join with his wife.
- They should love each other and take responsibility for each other’s welfare
- The sexual union is reserved for marriage couples only.
After Adam and Eve sinned, shame and awkwardness followed. Adam and Eve put on leaves to hide from God. In marriage, when immorality enters, there is a breakdown of physical, emotional and intimacy between couples.
