SCRIPTURE: GENESIS 18
BIBLE VERSES:
“ Then one of them said, “I will surely return to you about this time next year, and Sarah your wife will have a son.”” (Genesis 18:10)
“So Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, “After I am worn out and my lord is old, will I now have this pleasure?” (Genesis 18:12)
“Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son.” (Genesis 18:14)
THE THREE VISITORS (vs. 1-15)
While Abraham was sitting at the entrance to his tent, he saw three men standing nearby. He then met them and invited them to his tent. He cleared his tent and told Sarah to bake some bread for them. He also took a choice calf and prepared it for them with some curds and milk.
Then they told Abraham that Sarah will have a baby next year. When Sarah heard it, she laughed because she was past the age of child birth and Abraham was old. The men noticed Sarah laughed and told Abraham: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” (v. 14)
ABRAHAM PLEADS FOR SODOM (vs. 16-33)
The Lord told Abraham that he was going to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah. Abraham pleaded not to sweep away both the wicked and the righteous together. He huggled with the Lord to spare the whole place for the number of righteous people starting from 50 to 45, 40, 30, 20, 10. The Lord promised not to destroy it for the sake of 10.
THOUGHTS:
There are 3 visitors composed of the Lord Jesus Christ and two angels. Abraham welcomed and served them to make them feel at home without knowing that the Lord was among one of them. The Lord announced to Abraham that the promised son will be born within the year. He gave this assurance: “Is anything too hard for the Lord?” This teaches us to be hospitable to people who needs our care. It also teaches us to believe that nothing is impossible for God.
When Abraham knew about the forthcoming destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, he pleaded for justice and interceded for the righteous. As believers, let us also intercede for the lost by preaching the gospel for them to be saved.
