SCRIPTURE:  EXODUS 19

BIBLE VERSES:

On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt—on that very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai.  After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.  Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel:  ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.  Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine,  you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.” (Exodus 19:1-6)

AT MOUNT SINAI (vs. 1-25)

In the third month after the Israelites left Egypt, they entered the desert of Sinai.  They camped in front of Sinai mountain.  Moses went up to God and the Lord spoke to Moses saying: “Tell the people if you fully obey me and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession.  Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation” (vs. 5-6),  Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people and told them all the words the Lord had commanded him to speak.  The people responded together:  “We will do everything the Lord has said” (v. 8)

The Lord informed Moses that he would come down on Mt. Sinai on the third day.  No one was allowed to go to the mountain or he shall die.  On the third day, the Lord descended at Mr. Sinai in fire.  Mt. Sinai was covered with smoke and the whole mountain trembled violently.  The Lord called Moses to the top of the mountain.  He also called Moses to bring Aaron up.  But the priests and the people had to stay or else they will perish.

THOUGHTS:

Moses was told to purify the people so that they could be ready to meet God both physically and spiritually.  They were to set themselves apart by washing their clothes.  When you meet God or worship Him, you should also set aside the cares of everyday life.  Prepare yourself physically and mentally to be ready to meet God.
