SCRIPTURE: 1 SAMUEL 16
BIBLE VERSE:
“But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16″7)
SAMUEL ANOITED DAVID (vs. 1-13)
The Lord told Samuel to choose one of the sons of Jesse of Bethlehem to be the king. He instructed Samuel to take a heifer and invited Jesse to the sacrifice. When Samuel arrived, he saw Eliab and thought that he will be the one to be anointed but the Lord told him not to consider appearance or height because the Lord looks at the heart. Then Jesse called Abinadab, then Shammah and seven of his sons passed by but not one was chosen. So Samuel asked Jesse if those were his sons only. Jesse answered: “There is one, the youngest who was tending the sheep” (v. 11). Samuel asked him to send David over. As David arrived, he was ruddy, with a fine appearance and handsome features. And the Lord said: “Rise and anoint him, he is the one” (v. 12). So, Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers and from that day on, the Spirit of the Lord was with David. Samuel then returned to Ramah.
DAVID IN SAUL’S SERVICE (vs. 14-23)
Since the Spirit of the Lord had departed from Saul, an evil Spirit came to torment him. Saul’s attendant suggested to let Someone play the harp to make him feel better. So Saul sent messages to ask David to come. He became one of his armor bearer and Saul send words to Jesse to allow David to remain in his service. Whenever the evil Spirit would come to Saul, David would play his harp and relief would come to Saul. He would feel better and the evil Spirit would leave him.
THOUGHTS:
God used David’s musical skill to bring him into the king’s presence. If you have musical talents, serve the Lord. God may use whatever gifts you have to lift you up.
Man looks at the outward appearance but God sees the inside of your faith and character. Oftentimes, we spend so much time in improving our outward appearance but neglect to develop our inner character. What steps are you trying to improve your heart’s attitude?
