SCRIPTURE: 1 SAMUEL 19

SAUL TRIES TO KILL DAVID (vs. 1-24)

Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David.  But David was Jonathan’s best friend.  So, Jonathan warned him to be on guard by hiding while he talked with his father Saul.  Saul listened to Jonathan.  So, Jonathan brought David to Saul.  Once more, warn broke up between Philistines and Israelites.  David went to fight and stuck them down.  But an evil spirit came upon Saul while David was playing the harp.  Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear but David eluded him and escaped.

Saul sent men to David house to watch him and kill him in the morning.  But Michal, David’s wife told him to run for his life by letting him escape through a window.  Then Michal took an idol and laid it on bed  covering with a garment and putting some goats hair at the head.  when Saul’s men came to capture David, Michal told them that David was ill.  But Saul sent back his men instructed them to bring David to him.  As the men entered, they saw the idol instead of David.  David fled and went to Samuel at Ramah.  He told him everything.  When Saul knew that David was with Samuel in Naioth at Ramah, he sent men to capture him.  But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying with Samuel.  The Spirit of God came up to Saul’s men and they also prophesied.  Saul then sent more men for the third time and they prophesized too.  Finally, he himself led and went there.  But the Spirit of God came upon him and he walked along prophesying until he reached Naioth.

THOUGHTS:

Jonathan was David’s best friend so he kept David informed of Saul’s plans.  Michal, Saul’s daughter also risked her life to protect her husband.  Until the day of his death, David was with Samuel who stood by him.

The Bible teaches us to honor our parents.  But is it right for Jonathan to disobey his father?  The principle of the Scripture is for a son to be respectful, helpful and obedient to his father but not to follow command or advice that violate God’s laws.
