SCRIPTURE:  2 SAMUEL 7

GOD’S PROMISE TO DAVID (vs. 1-17)

One night, the Lord spoke to Nathan the prophet.  this was his instruction:  “Since I brought the Israelites out of Egypt, I have been moving from place to place with a tent as my dwelling.  Tell David that I have made him ruler over my people Israel and cut off all the enemies.  I will make his name great.  When his days are over, I will raise up his offspring to succeed him.  He is the one who will build a house for my Name and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.  My love will always be with him.  His house and kingdom will endure forever and his throne will be established forever.

DAVID’S PRAYER (vs. 18-29)

David prayed to God declaring His greatness for He had redeemed His people, performed great and awesome wonders and became their God.  He praised God for His words are trustworthy and had promised good things to him.  He asked God to bless his house forever.

THOUGHTS:

David wanted to build a house for the Lord but the Lord did not permit him to do so because He did not want His temple built by a warrior.  However, David submitted to God’s will and listened to God’s word.  He made the plan and collected the materials for his son Solomon to begin the work.  If God says no to your plan, be ready to submit to His will.  Utilize other opportunities that God has provided because He may direct you for a greater purpose in life.

David asked God’s permission to build His earthly temple but god responded by promising him eternal kingdom.  This tremendous act of grace humbled David to praise His greatness.  David’s concern was not for himself but His will be done and His name be magnified.
