Our Daily Scripture – 10/29/23 (Sunday)

SCRIPTURE:  JOB 13

JOB’S REPLY TO HIS FRIENDS (vs. 1-28)

  1. My eyes have seen and my ears have heard.  What you know, I also know.  I am not inferior to you. (vs. 1-2)
  2. You smear me with lies.  All of you are worthless physicians. (v. 4)
  3. If you would altogether be silent that would be wisdom. (v. 5)
  4. Will you speak unkindly and deceitfully on God’s behalf? (v. 7)
  5. Will you show his partiality and argue the case for God? (v. 8)
  6. Would I turn out well if he examined you?  Could you deceive hm as you might deceive men? (v. 9)
  7. Would he not rebuke you if you secretly showed partiality? (v. 10)
  8. Would not his splendor terrify you? (v. 11)
  9. Your maxims are proverbs of ashes; your defenses are defenses of clay. (v. 12)
  10. Keep silent and let me speak; then let come to me what may. (v. 13)

JOB’S FAITH IN GOD:

  1.  Though he slay me, yet will I hope in Him; I will surely defend my ways to his face. (v. 15)
  2.  Indeed, this will turn out for my deliverance, for no godless man would dare come before him! (v. 16)

JOB’S APPEAL TO GOD:

  1. Withdraw your hand far from me, and stop frightening me with your terrors. (v. 21)
  2. Summon me and I will answer, or let me speak, and you reply. (v. 22)

JOB ASKED GOD THESE QUESTIONS:

  1. How many wrongs and sins have I committed? (v. 23)
  2. Why do you hide your face and consider me your enemy? (v. 24)
  3. Will you torment a windblown leaf?  Will you chase after dry chaff? (v. 25)
  4. Why did you write down bitter things against me and make me inherit the sins of my youth? (v. 26)
  5. Why do you fasten my feet in shackles and keep close watch on all my paths by putting marks on the soles of my feet? (v. 27)

THOUGHTS:

Job described his three friends as worthless doctors who did not know what they were prescribing.  They were right that God is just and God punishes sins.  But they were wrong to assume that Job’s suffering was a just punishment to his sins.  They took a true principle and applied it wrongly ignoring that there are many differences in human circumstance.  Do not apply biblical condemnation to others.  Be slow to judge.  Instead, show love and compassion.

Job saw God as the judge and wanted to meet Him in court.  But even if God condemn him, Job still trusted Him when he said: “Though he slay me, yet will I hope in him. (v. 15).  Do you have this kind of faith in God?
