SCRIPTURE: JOB 22
ELIPHAZ (vs. 1-30)
ACCUSATIONS OF ELIPHAZ AGAINST JOB:
- Is it for your piety that he rebukes you and brings charges against you? (v. 4)
- Is not your wickedness great? Are not your sins endless? (v. 5)
- You demanded security from your brothers for no reason; you stripped men of their clothing, leaving them naked. (v. 6)
- You gave no water to the weary and you withheld food from the hungry though you were a powerful man, owing land, an honored man, living on it. (v. 7-8)
- You sent widows away empty handed and broke the strength of the fatherless. (v. 9)
- You keep to the old path that evil men have trod. (v. 15)
ELIPHAZ’S ADVICES TO JOB:
- Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you. 9v. 21)
- Accept instruction from his mouth and lay up his words in your heart. (v. 23)
- Return to the Almighty, and your will be restored; remove wickedness far from you net. (v. 23)
- Assign your nuggets to the dusts, your gold of Ophir to the rocks in t he ravines. Then the Almighty will be your gold, the choicest silver for you. (v. 24-25)
- You will pray to him, and he will hear you. and your will fulfill your vows. (v. 27)
- What you decide on will be done, and light will shine on your ways. (v. 28)
- When men are brought low and you say, ‘Life them up!’, the he will save the downcast. (v. 29)
- He will deliver even one who is not innocent, who will be delivered through the cleanness of your hands. (v. 30)
THOUGHTS:
This is Eliphaz’s final speech to Job. In this speech, he mentioned several possible sins that Job might have committed. Then he suggested Job to admit his sin and repent so that he would receive peace and restoration.
Eliphaz showed a partial knowledge of God’s truth and character but he had trouble in applying this truth to life accurately. He was correct in saying that we must ask for God’s forgiveness when we sin but his statement did not apply to Job, who had live closely in touch with God.
