SCRIPTURE: JOB 29
JOB RECALLED HIS PAST:
- God’s lamp shine upon my head and by his light I walked through darkness! (v. 3)
- God’s intimate friendship blessed my house. (v. 4)
- The Almighty was with me and my children were around me. (v. 5)
- My path was drenched with cream and the rock poured out for me streams of olive oi. (v. 6)
- The young men saw me and stepped aside and the old men rose to their feet. (v. 8)
- The chief men refrained from speaking and covered their mouths with their hands. (v. 9)
- The voices of the nobles were hushed, and their tongues stuck to the roof of their mouths. (v. 10)
- Whoever heard me spoke well of me, and those who saw me commended me. (v. 11)
- I rescued the poor who cried for help and the fatherless who had none to assist him. (v. 12)
- The man who was dying blessed me; I made the widow’s heart sing. (v. 13)
- I put righteousness as my clothing; justice was my robe and my turban. (v. 14)
- I was eyes to the blind and feet to the lame. (v. 15)
- I was a father to the needy; I took up the case of the stranger. (v. 16)
- I broke the fangs of the wicked and snatched the victims from their teeth. (v. 17)
- I will die in my own house, my days as numerous as the grains of sand. (v. 18)
- My roots will reach to the water, and the dew will lie all night on my branches. (v. 19)
- My glory will remain fresh in me; the bow ever new in my hand. (v. 20)
- Men listened to me expectantly, waiting in silence for my counsel. (v. 21)
- After I had spoken, they spoke no more; my words fell gently on their ears. (v. 22)
- They waited for me as for showers and drank in my words as the spring rain. (v. 23)
- When I smile at them, they scarcely believed it; the light of my face was precious to them. (v. 24)
- I chose the way for them and sat as their chief; I dwelt as a king among his troops; I was like one who comforts mourners. (v. 25)
THOUGHTS:
Job longed for his “good old days” to return. He tested some of the blessings he had enjoyed and mentioned the services he had performed for others. Let your past be more than a memory. Use it today to grow and prepare for tomorrow to become an investment in your life. While it is not wrong to recount our past deeds, it is better to recount God’s blessings to us.
When we try to brag our past accomplishment, pride comes in. It separates us from God by making us think that we are better than we really are. This leads us too trust on our own opinions and ignore God’s word.
