SCRIPTURE: PSALMS 1
INTRODUCTION:
The word “Psalms” comes from a Greek word that means ” a poem sung to musical accompaniment”> The Hebrew name is “Tehillim” which means “Melody of Praise”. It shows a variety of emotions from ecstatic joy to despair and contrition. It also brings comfort and encouragement when you trust in God. The theme of Psalms consists of Praise, God’s power, Forgiveness, Repentance, Thankfulness and Trust. The purpose of the Book of Psalms is for corporate worship and personal devotion of Jews. The focal point is Faith in God. It teaches us to have a personal relationship with God as we tell him our hurts and our needs. It allows us to meditate on His greatness and glory.
MEMORY VERSE:
“Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mocker. Buit his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he mediates day and night. (Psalms 1:1-2)
THER ARE 150 PSALMS DIVIDED INTO 5 SECTIONS:
- Psalms 1-41
- Psalms 42-72
- Psalms 73-89
- Psalms 90-106
- Psalms 107-150
THE AUTHORS AND THE NUMBER OF PSALM EACH COMPOSED:
- David – 73
- Asaph – 12
- Sons of Korah – 10
- Moses -= 1
- Henan the Ezrahite – 1
- Ethan the Ezrahite – 1
- Solomon – 1 or 2
- The rest of the psalms have no recorded authors.
DESCRIPTION OF THE GODLY:
- He does not walk in the counsels of the wicked. (v. 1a)
- He does not stand in the way of the sinners. (v. 1n)
- He does not sit in the seat of the mockers. (v. 1c)
- His delight is in the law of the Lord. (v. 2a)
- He mediates him day and night. (v. 2b)
- He is like a tree planted by streams of water which yields its fruits in season and whose leaf does not wither. (v. 3)
- Whatever he does prospers. (v. 3b)
DESCRIPTION OF THE WICKED:
- They are like chaff that wind blows away (v. 4)
- They will not stand in the judgment nor in the assembly of the righteous. (v. 5)
- They will perish. (v. 6)
THOUGHTS:
HOW TO HAVE A BLESSED LIFE:
- You must have discernment when you walk, stand or sit. Watch every step that will not lead you to sin.
- You must delight in His word and apply it to your daily life.
- You must mediate His law day and night.
- Your spiritual roots must go deep into the resources of God’s grace.
- You must bear fruit as testimony to the world.
LIFE HAS TWO ROADS TO CHOOSE:
Chaff is a symbol of faithless life that drifts along without direction. Good grain is a symbol of faithful life that can be used by God. Which one will you choose – Chaff or Grain?
