SCRIPTURE: PSALM 49
MEMORY VERSES:
“Do not be overawed when a man grows rich, when the splendor of his house increases; for he will take nothing with him when he dies, his splendor will not descend with him. (Psalm 49:16-17)
“A man who has riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish.” (Psalm 49:20)
This Psalm deals with two important subjects – Death and Wealth:
DEATH AND WEALTH:
- No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him. (v. 7)
- The ransom for a life is costly. (v. 8a)
- No payment is ever enough to ransom for a life. (v. 8b)
- No one can live on forever and not see decay. (v. 9)
- All men – wise, foolish and the senseless – will perish. (v. 10)
- All men has to leave their wealth to others. (v. 10b)
- Their tombs will remain their houses forever even if they have lands named after them. (v. 11)
- Man, despite of his riches cannot endure. He is like the beasts that perish. (v. 12)
- Man is like sheep destined for the grave and death will feed on him. (v. 14)
- No man can take anything with him when he dies. (v. 17a)
- His splendor will not descend with him. (v 17b)
- He will join the generation of his fathers and cannot see the light of life. (v. 19)
- A man with riches without understanding is like the beasts that perish. (v. 20)
THOUGHTS:
WHY YOU MUST NOT TRUST IN YOUR WEALTH?
- Your wealth cannot prevent death. (vs. 5-9)
- Your wealth cannot go with you. (vs. 10-15)
- Your wealth cannot buy permanent fame. (vs. 16-20)
All of us know that at the moment of death, we are naked and empty handed before God. The only riches we have are those we have already invested in our eternal heritage. So, while on earth, we must invest treasures in heaven by placing our faith in God, pledging ourselves to obey Him and utilizing our resources for His kingdom.
