SCRIPTURE: PSALM 58
MEMORY VERSE:
“The righteous will be glad when they are avenged, when they bathe their feet in the blood of the wicked. Then men will say, “Surely the righteous still are rewarded; surely there is a God who judged the earth.” (Psalm 58:10-11)
David used many images as he prayed for the judgment of the wicked:
- From birth, the wicked go astray, from the womb they are wayward and speak lies. (v. 3)
- Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears. (v. 4)
- The teeth of their mouth was like the fangs of the lions. (v. 6)
- They are like a slug melting away as it moves along, like a stillborn child, they did not see the sun. (v. 8)
THOUGHTS:
David denounced the unjust rulers and people who promoted evil by condemning the righteous and defending the wicked. He asked God to judge sinners and establish righteousness on the earth.
A holy anger against sin and a forgiving spirit towards sinners are the marks of a true child of God. A true believer must oppose wickedness and sinfulness of this world and adhere to the holiness of God. A church that felt a holy anger against sin has a more effective ministry as the salt of the earth and the light of the world.
