SCRIPTURE: PSALM 59
MEMORY VERSE:
“But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble.” (Psalm 59:16)
“O my Strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.” (Psalm 59:17)
WHO ARE THE ENEMIES OF DAVID?
- The evildoers (v. 2a)
- The bloodthirsty men. (v. 2b)
- Fierce men (v. 3)
- All the nations (v. 5a)
- The wicked traitors. (v. 5b)
WHAT THE ENEMIES DID:
- They rise up against him. (v. 1b)
- They lie in wait for him. (v. 3a)
- They conspire against him. (v. 3b)
- They are ready to attack him. (v. 4)
- They return at evening snarling like dogs and prowl about the city. (v. 6)
- They spew out swords from their lips. (v. 7)
WHAT DAVID ASKED FROM GOD:
- Deliver me from my enemies, O God; protect me from those who rise up against me. (v. 1)
- Deliver me from evildoers and save me from bloodthirsty men. (v. 2)
- Arise to help me; look on my plight! (v. 4)
- Rouse yourself to punish all the nations; show no mercy to wicked traitors. (v. 5)
- Laugh and scoff at all those nations. (v. 8)
- Do not kill them but make them wander about and bring them down. (v. 11)
- Let them be caught in their pride the sins of their mouths and the words of their lips. (v. 12)
- Consume them in wrath till they are no more. (v. 13)
WHAT DAVID WILL DO:
- I watch for you, my loving God and my fortress. (v. 9)
- I will sing of your strength and of your love. (v. 16)
- I will sing praise to you, my fortress, my loving God. (v. 17)
THOUGHTS:
Vile men curse God but God scoff at them. Evil people live as if there is no God. But God hears and sees everything. He will raise up one day to judge them.
David encountered friends betrayal and his own son’s rebellion. But he knew that God’s love for him was changeless. God’s love and mercy to those who trust in Him is permanent. When people disappoint and mistreat you, rest in God’s enduring love.
