“The length of our days is seventy years – or eighty, if we have the strength; yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we flyaway.” (Psalm 90:10)
“Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12))

“May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us – yes, establish the work of our hands.” (Psalm 90:17)
Moses was the author of this Psalm. He saw that the nation had rebelled in unbelief and the anger of God was upon them. His wrath had shortened the life span of the people. So Moses said: “The length of our days is 70 years or 80. yet their span is but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass and we fly away” (v. 10). He asked God to teach them to number their days and gain a heart of wisdom. (v. 12). He wished that the favor of the Lord will rest upon them and establish the work of their hands.
MOSES DESCRIBED WHAT GOD HAS DONE AS FOLLOWS:
- Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (v. 2)
- You turn men back to dust. (v. 3)
- You sweep men away in the sleep of death. (v. 5)
- Your anger consumed us and your indignation terrified us. (v. 7)
REQUESTS OF MOSES:
- Teach us to to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (v. 12)
- Relent and have compassion on your servants. (v. 13)
- Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love. (v. 14)
- Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us. (v. 15)
- Show your deeds to your servants and your splendor to their children. (v. 16)
- Rest upon us with your favor and establish the work of our hands. (v. 17)
THOUGHTS:
Our age is usually measured by years. But Moses asked God to teach us to number our DAYS. Life is brief, no matter how long you live. So we need God to help us to use our days wisely and joyfully in serving Him. We can find real satisfaction if we do God’s will and glorify His name. In spite of the burdens of life and its brevity, life is worth living when you trust the Lord.
