SCRIPTURE: ISAIAH 29
MEMORY VERSES:
“These people come near to me with their mouth and honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Their worship of me is made up only of rules taught by men.” (Isaiah 29:13)
“You turn things upside down, as if the potter were thought to be like the clay! Shall what is formed say to him who formed it, “He did not make me”? Can the pot say of the potter, “He knows nothing”?
WOE TO DAVID’S CITY (vs. 1-24)
Prophet Isaiah described David’s city as
- A Besieged city (vs. 1-8) The city of Jerusalem will become a besieged city. The enemies will be like dust and chaff. The Lord Almighty will come with thunder and earthquake and great noise, with windstorms and tempest and flame of a devouring fire.
- A Blind city (vs. 9-16) The people were like drunkards and sleeping blind men. They tried to read a seal book but they don’t understand about spiritual things. They honor God with their mouths and lips but their hearts are far from God. They made their own plans without consulting the maker. They were like pot that says to the potter, “He knows nothing”.
- A Blessed city (vs. 17-24) When Christ returns and establishes His kingdom, God’s people will see His truth and hear His word. They will keep His name holy and honor the Holy One of Israel
THOUGHTS:
Ariel is a special name for Jerusalem. It means “lion of God” or “altar hearth”. Isaiah condemned the nation of Israel for hypocrisy. They followed the religious routine rituals and worshiped God in mouth and lips. But their hearts were far from God. When we worship God, we should worship Him honestly and sincerely by giving Him our love and devotion.
The people of Israel tried to hide their plans from God thinking that God will not know. Remember that God is a all-knowing God. He examines us and knows everything about us. We cannot hide anything from Him.
