SCRIPTURE: JEREMIAH 51
THIS IS THE MESSAGE OF THE LORD TO JEREMIAH ABOUT BABYLON:
- Babylon will be destroyed by foreigners and her land devastated. (v. 2)
- The Lord will take vengeance for his temple. (v. 121)
- The Lord has stirred up the kings of the Medes to destroy Babylon. (v. 11)
- Babylon will repay all the wrongs they have done in Zion. (vv. 24)
- Babylon’s warriors have stopped fighting because their strength is exhausted and become like women. (v. 30)
- Babylon will be a heap of ruins, a haunt of jackals; an object of horror and scorn, a place where no one lives. (c. 37)
- Her people all roar like young lions, they growl like lion cubs. (v. 3*)
- The Lord will bring them down like lambs to the slaughter, like rams and goats. (v. 40)
- The sea will rise over Babylon, its roaring waves will cover her. (v. 42)
- Her towns will be desolate, a dry and desert land, a land where no one lives or travels. (v. 43)
- The wall of Babylon will fall. (v. 44)
- The idols of Babylon all will be punished. Her whole land will be disgraced and her slain will all lie fallen within here. (v. 47)
- Waves of enemies will rage like great waters; the roar of their voices will resound. (v. 55)
- A destroyer will come against Babylon; her warriors will be captured, and their bows will be broken. (v. 56)
- Her officials, wise men, governors, officers and warriors will get drunk and sleep forever and not awake. (v. 57)
- Babylon’s thick wall will be leveled and her high gates set on fire; the peoples exhaust themselves for nothing, the nations’ labor is only fuel for the flames. (v. 58)
THOUGHTS:
The ruins of Babylon reminds us that God is the Governor of the nations and Judge of all the earth. Babylon had oppressed the people of Israel and God does not allow them to remain unpunished. The wicked may triumph for a while but they will surely face the consequence of judgment.
