GOD’S ANGER AT SIN (vs. 1-22)

  1.  He hurled down the splendor of Israel from heaven to earth. (v. 1)
  2.  He swallowed up the dwelling of Jacob and torn down the strongholds of the Daughter of Judah.   He has brought her kingdom and its princes down to the ground in dishonor. (v. 2)

  4.  He has strung his bow with his right hand ready to slain her like a foe.  He has poured out his wrath like fire on the ten of the Daughter of Zion. (v. 4)
  5.  He has swallowed up Israel’s palaces and destroyed her stronghold.  He has multiplied mourning and lamentation for the daughter of Judah.    (v. 5)
  6.  He has laid waste his dwelling like a garden and destroyed his place of meeting.  He has made them forget her appointed feasts and Sabbaths.   In his fierce anger, he has spurned both kings and priests. (v. 6)
  7.  He has rejected his altar and abandoned his sanctuary.  He has handed over to the enemy the walls of her palaces. (v. 7)
  8.  He has torn down and destroyed the wall around the Daughter of Zion. (v. 8)
  9.  Her gates and bars has broken and destroyed.  Her king and her princes are exiled among the nations.  There is no more law and her prophets   no longer find visions from the Lord.  (v. 9)
  10.  He has fulfilled what he has planned.  He has overthrown her without pity and let the enemy gloat over her.  He has exalted the horn of her foes. (v. 17)

THOUGHTS:

For forty years, Jeremiah had warned the people that their sins would bring judgment but the nation would not listen.  The people preferred to hear the “popular message” of the false prophets.  People today also do not want to listen to “healthy doctrine”.  Instead, they want preachers who will tickle their ears and entertain them with a message of false assurance.   God’s Word will always prevail and He will surely judge the world.

When sin cover us with suffering, we can still cry out to the Lord and ask forgiveness.  God is merciful and He will come to our rescue if we sincerely repent and promise to obey His command.
