Our Daily Scripture – 6/27/25 (Friday)

SCRIPTURE:  ROMANS 2

MEMORY VERSE:

“God will give to each person according to what he has done.  To those who by persistence in doing good, seek glory, honor and immortality, He will give eternal life.” (Romans 2:7)

GOD’S RIGHTEOUS JUDGMENT (vs. 1-16)

  1.  You must not pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself. (v. 1)
  2.  If you pass judgment against others and you do the same things, you will not escape God’s judgment. (v. 3)
  3.  God’s kindness, tolerance and patience lead you toward repentance. (v. 4)
  4.  God will give to each person according to what he has done. (v. 6)
  5.  Those who do good persistently seek glory, honor and immortality and God will give them eternal life. (v. 7)
  6.  Those who are self-seeking, reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger. (v. 8)
  7.  There will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil to the Jews and the Gentiles. (v. 90)
  8.  For everyone who does good, there will be glory, honor and peace. (v. 10)
  9.  God does not show favoritism. (v. 11)
  10.  All who sin apart from the law will perish apart from the law, and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law. (v. 12(
  11.  Only those who obey the law will be declared righteous in God’s sight. (v. 13)
  12.  God will judge men’s secrets through Jesus Christ. (v. 16)

THE JEWS AND THE LAW (vs. 17-29)

The Jews considered themselves having knowledge of the law and truth –  A guide for the blind, a light for those who are in the dark (v. 19) and an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants (v. 20).  So Paul asked them these questions because “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of the Jews.” (v. 24)

  1.  If you teach others, do you teach yourself?  You preach against stealing, do you steal? (vs. 21)
  2.  You say that people should not commit adultery, do you commit adultery? (v. 22a)
  3.  You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?  (v. 22b)
  4.  You who brag about the law, do you dishonor God by breaking the law?  (v. 23)

Circumcision has value if the law is observed. But if you break the law, you have become as though you had not been circumcised.  The one who is not circumcised physically and yet obeys the law will condemn you as a lawbreaker even though you have the written code and circumcision. (vs. 25-27)

A man is not a Jew if he is only one outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical.  No, a man is a Jew if he is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code.  Such a man’s praise is not from men, but from God.

THOUGHTS:

Before you come to the judgment seat of Christ, ask yourself these questions:

  1.  Do I judge others?
  2.  Am I grateful for God’s goodness and blessings?
  3.  Do I obey God’s truth and prove it with good deeds?
  4.  Am I living a holy life?
  5.  Is my heart tender or hard?

Salvation comes by faith alone. We are not saved by good works but our good deeds are a grateful response to what God has done, not a prerequisite to earning the eternal life.

Paul explained that a true Jew is not someone who has been circumcised but someone whose heart is right with God and obeys him.  Membership in God’s family is based on internal, not external qualities.   All those hearts are right with God are part of God’s family.  Attending church, being baptized, or accepted for membership of the church are not enough, just as submitting to circumcision was not enough for the Jews.  God desires our heartfelt devotion and obedience.
