SCRIPTURE: HEBREWS 3
JESUS GREATER THAN MOSES (vs. 1-6)
Comparison of Jesus vs. Moses:
- Jesus was faithful to the one who appointed him. / Moses was faithful in all God’s house. (vs. 2)
- Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. (v. 3)
- Jesus is faithful as a son over God’s house. / Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house. (v. 5-6)
WARNING AGAINST UNBELIEF (vs. 7-19)
During the exodus, the forefathers hardened their hearts in rebellion against God’s voice in the desert. God was angry with that generation because their hearts went astray and did not follow God’s ways. Therefore in His anger, He declared an oath that they shall never enter His rest.
So brothers, none of you must not have a sinful unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. The Israelites whom Moses led out of Egypt wandered in the desert for 40 years because they had disobeyed God. They were not able to enter the promised land because of their unbelief.
THOUGHTS:
EXHORTATIONS TO THE JEWISH CHRISTIANS;
- Fix your thoughts on Jesus. (v. 1)
- Hear his voice and do not harden your hearts. (v. 7)
- Believe in Him and obey God’s word. (v. 16-19)
JESUS’ RELATIONSHIP TO BELIEVERS :
- He is the Messenger of God.
- He is our High Priest, through whom we come to God the Father.
- He is the ruler of God’s house.
WHY IS JESUS WORTHY OF GREATER GLORY THAN MOSES:
- Moses was merely a human servant but Jesus is more than human, he is God himself.
- Moses led the people of Israel out of Egyptian bondage, but Christ led us out of sin’s slavery.
- Moses was faithful to God’s calling to deliver Israel and prepare the way for the Messiah while Jesus himself is the Messiah who accomplished the work of salvation.
Do not harden your heart by setting yourself against God. Obey God’s Word and stay in fellowship with other believers. Let God give you a new heart, new desire and new spirit to have a strong faith in God.
THE MEANING OF GOD’S REST:
- The 7th day of creation.
- The Promised land of Canaan.
- Peace with God through our relationship with Christ in faith.
