[:en]This Psalm is especially written for the aged. It focuses on God’s special blessings for those who are getting older. David wrote in verse 9 “Do not cast me away when I am old, do not forsake me when my strength is gone”. And in verse 18, he said: “Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, O God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your might to all who are to come”.
What are some of the problems we encounter when we become old?
- Shame (v. 1) – As we get older, we cannot cope up with the many things that are happening so rapidly. People may ridicule us but we do not have to worry because we can take refuge in God.
- Abandonment (v. 9a) – Most often, loneliness is felt among the older people because their children have left them. David was asking God not to cast him away when he is old. He needed God’s presence to comfort him.
- Weakness (v. 9b) – As we grow older, our physical strength is failing but God can provide the spritual strength we need.
- Fear (v. 5) – Older people have lots of fear to face. They are afraid of sickness and insecurity but David put his hope and confidence in God. “But as for me, I will always have hope” (v. 14)
David used the word “ALWAYS” 3 TIMES.
- “Be my rock of refuge, to which I can always go” (v. 3)
- “From birth I have relied on you. You brought me farther from my mother’s womb. I will always praise you” (v. 6)
- “But as for me, I will always have hope” (v. 14)
May we rely our god to grow old graciously. May we find refuge in the Lord and always hope in Him. May we continuously pray and rejoice, praise and be confident knowing that He holds His promises. May we share Him with others in the next generation and gloriy Him till we mee Him one day.[:]
