JESUS TALKS WITH A SAMARITAN WOMAN (vs. 1-26)
Jesus came to a town in Samaria called Sychar and rested on Jacob’s well. A Samaritan woman came to draw water and Jesus asked water from her. Since the Jews did not associate with the Samaritans, the woman was surprised why Jesus was asking a drink from her. Jesus introduced to her the living water that he can give. And whoever drinks it will never thirst again. When the woman asked from Him the living water, He told her to go and call her husband to come back which she replied: “I have no husband” (vs. 16-17). Then Jesus revealed that she had 5 husbands before and the man now with her was not her husband. The woman was dumb-founded and called Him Prophet. She said they worship in this mountain while the Jews worshiped in Jerusalem. But Jesus said: “It does not matter where you worship. God wants true worshipers to worship Him in spirit and in truth. Then Jesus revealed to her that He is the Messiah called Christ.
THE DISCIPLES REJOIN JESUS (vs. 27-38)
The disciples went to buy food and returned. the Samaritan woman left her water jar and went back to the town and shared the good news about Christ. When the disciples asked Jesus to eat, He said: “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me to finish His work” (v. 24). The disciples were more concerned about physical food than spiritual food. But Jesus, who was weary and thirsty always put spiritual matters above physical comfort. He reminded the disciples that all God’s people must work together in the harvest field – some sowing, some reaping. But it is God who make things grow. (1 Cor. 3:5-9)
MANY SAMARITANS BELIEVE (vs. 39-42)
Due to the testimony of the Samaritan woman, many believed. The Samaritans urged Jesus to stay with them for 2 days, and because of His words, many became believers and know that Jesus is the “Savior of the World” (v. 42)
JESUS HEALS THE OFFICIAL’S SON (vs. 43-54)
Jesus arrived at Galilee and visit Cana. There was a royal official whose son lay sick at Capernaum. When he knew Jesus was coming, he went to meet Him and begged Him to come and heal His son who was closed to death. Jesus said: “You may go. Your son will live” (v. 50). The man believed and departed. Then his servant came to meet him and told him that his son has got better now. When the father asked when the fever left him, he realized that it was the exact time at which Jesus said: “Your son will live”. As a result, all of his household believed.
SUMMARY:
Christ set an example for us to win souls in a friendly way. He did not allow personal prejudice or physical needs to hinder Him. He dealt with her privately and lovingly in presenting the gospel and the way of salvation. He used something common – water, and used it as an illustration of eternal life.
The healing of the official’s son showed that salvation is by faith. The official believed Jesus’s word without doubt. He did not rush home to see what happened to her son proved his real faith in Christ’s word. His son was healed and the whole family trusted Christ.
Do not based your salvation on feelings, dreams, vision or voices. Put your faith on the Word of God. For “There is hope, joy and peace in trusting the Lord” (Rom. 15:13)
In this chapter, Jesus led the Samaritan woman to know Him. The woman’s testimony won many Samaritans, and all the household of the official believed in Jesus. How about you? Have you led someone to Christ through your teaching, testimony or trusting in Christ?[:]
