“Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed” (John 20:29)
THE EMPTY TOMB (vs. 1-9)
On the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene went to the tomb and saw that Jesus was no longer there. She ran to the disciples and told them somebody had taken the Lord out of the tomb. Peter and John ran towards the tomb and saw the strips of linen and the burial cloth lying there.
JESUS APPEARS TO MARY MAGDALENE (vs. 10-18)
As Mary was crying outside the tomb, Jesus appeared and called her. Mary saw Jesus, turned towards Him and cried out: “Teacher” (v. 16). Jesus told her to tell the brothers that He is returning to His Father. Mary told the disciples that she had seen the Lord.
JESUS APPEARS TO HIS DISCIPLES (vs. 19-30)
Jesus came to His disciples and said: “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you” (v. 21). And He breathe on them saying: “Receive the Holy Spirit” (v. 22)
JESUS APPEARS TO THOMAS (vs. 24-31)
When the disciples told Thomas that they had seen the Lord, Thomas said: “Unless I see the nail marks on his hand and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe it” (v. 25). A week later, while Thomas was with the disciples, Jesus came and stood among them. He said to Thomas: “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe” (v. 27). Thomas said to Him: “My Lord and my God” (v. 28). Then Jesus told him: “Because you have seen me, you have believed, blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe” (v. 29).
SUMMARY;
Jesus had 3 appearances here with 3 results:
- To Mary – it was LOVE for Christ. Mary loved Jesus, so she wanted to take care of His body. She went there and met Jesus.
- To the Disciples – it was HOPE. After Jesus died, the disciples were so discouraged and in fear. Jesus’ appearance gave them hope.
- To Thomas – it was FAITH. Thomas would not believe without proof. When he touched Jesus, he finally believed.
LOVE – Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with your your soul, with all your mind and with all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself (Mat. 22:37-39; Mark 12:30-31; Luke 10:27)
HOPE – Believe in Jesus and you shall the hope of eternal life. (John 3:16; John 5:24; John 10:27-28)
FAITH – Fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrew 12:2) for nothing is impossible for God (Luke 1:37)[:zh]SCRIPTURE: JOHN 20
