[:en]SCRIPTURE:  PSALM 82

“God presides in the great assembly; he gives judgment among the ‘gods” (Psalm 82:1)

“How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed.  Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked” (psalm 82:2-4)

The “god” here stands for the “human judges” on earth.  Asaph indicted the human judges for failure to defend the poor and the needy.  Instead of condemning the wicked, they were being partial.  The legal system that God ordained for Israel had been distorted.

The foundation of the earth for peace and order in society were shaken because of unrighteousness and injustice.  It brought darkness instead of light.  That is why the psalmist was calling God to rise up and judge the earth.

Leaders of the land will one day answer to God.  The selfish judges may have power and riches on earth but they will ultimately be judged by the JUDGE of all the earth.  They will reap what they sow.[:]
