[:en]SCRIPTURE: JEREMIAH 19
“This is what the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel. says: Listen! I am going to bring on this city and the villages around it every disaster I pronounced against them, because they were stiff-necked and would not listen to my words” (Jeremiah 19:15)
The Lord told Jeremiah to go and buy a clay jar from a potter. Then, take along some of the elders of the people and of the priest to go out to the Valley of Hinnom, near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. There proclaim that God was going to bring a disaster because the people had forsaken Him and worshiped foreign gods with burned sacrifices. They built high places of Baal to burn their sons in fire as offerings to Baal So, this place will be called the Valley of Slaughter.
What will God do?
- I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies (v. 7a)
- I will give the carcasses as food to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth (v. 7b)
- I will devastate their city and make it an object of scorn (v. 8)
- I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters and they will eat one another’s flesh (v. 9)
- I will smash this nation and this city against as this potter’s jar is smashed an cannot be repaired (v. 10)
- I will make this city like Topeth meaning “hell” (v. 12)
- The house in Jerusalem and those of the kings of Judah will be defiled (v. 13)
